Naturalistic Gardens blur the line between the cultivated and the wild – gardens that feel like they belong where they are. Seedheads, spent growth, grasses in decline – these are part of the story, not something to hide.

  • Lunch, Drinks, tea & coffee served in the RCHC Conservatory.

Speakers: Peter Shaw and Tim Pilgrim:

Peter and Tim will share stories from the gardens they’ve shaped over the years – how they guide the process of garden making from design to building to ongoing care. What they’ve learned and how naturalistic gardening can help us meet the climate challenges ahead.

 Shared Threads:

• Naturalistic planting — loose, layered, seasonal, and connected to the land.
• Belonging to place — gardens shaped by climate, soil, and the surrounding landscape.
• Seasonal honesty — letting gardens show the season they’re in, not masking it.
• Climate resilience — designing gardens that adapt rather than resist.

 Points of Difference:

Peter works on the wild Surf Coast — coastal winds, salt air, sandy soils. His gardens lean into restraint, texture, and the rugged beauty of the coast.
Tim works inland — hotter summers, colder winters, richer soils. His gardens are immersive, perennialdriven, and deeply seasonal, with bold plant communities that shift through the year.
Peter builds gardens that echo the bush and coastline.
Tim builds gardens that echo meadows, prairies, and naturalistic perennial landscapes adapted to Australia.

Different climates. Different palettes. Same philosophy.
